Toddler Pajama Choices

When you think of toddler pajamas, you may automatically consider one-piece outfits that can work virtually year round. In many cases, these are the perfect choices for toddlers to wear, but what are some of your options?

  • Footed jammies: Footed pajamas are certainly an easy way to ensure that your toddler will stay warm and cozy all night long. With footed pajamas, you don't have to worry about whether or not your child will toss his covers in the middle of the night. For added warmth in winter months, you can put on a T-shirt underneath his jammies as well.
  • Footless pajamas: Why buy footless pajamas as opposed to footed ones? A toddler that is experiencing a growth spurt may outgrow his pajamas quicker than you're ready to buy another pair. Footless pajamas work for those kids who continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Simply put a pair of socks on your little one's feet to keep his toes cozy and comfy.
  • Two piece jammies: Two piece toddler pajamas may or may not include snaps at the bottom of the shirt and top of the pants to join the two pieces together. If they don't include snaps, simply tuck your child's shirt into his pants. Two piece pajamas are an excellent choice for potty training children as well, since they can quickly pull pants up and down, without removing their shirts.
  • Short or long jammies: Many parents continue to purchase long pajama pants even in the warmer months, since kids will still kick covers, and air conditioned rooms can get quite chilly at night. For warmer weather, however, consider lighter weight material and short sleeves, even if you forgo pajama shorts and opt for pants instead.

Smart Shopping

What are some smart shopping strategies you can use when purchasing toddler pajamas?

  • Hit the clearance sales: End of the season sales are the best way to get really great deals on new toddler pajamas. Simply purchase the next size that your child will be wearing, and store the pjs away until they are needed.
  • Consignment sales: Many towns hold consignment sales two or three times a year featuring clothing for an upcoming season. You can typically find gently used clothing at drastically discounted prices, saving you lots of money.
  • Other alternatives: Your child doesn't always have to have pajamas to sleep in. Consider purchasing flannel pants and pairing them with a long-sleeved or short-sleeved T-shirt, or purchase sweat pants and sweat shirts as toasty alternatives.

Safety Concerns

If you do purchase used clothing or clothes that aren't labeled as children's pajamas, however, be aware of safety concerns. The debate continues to wage over the safety of non-flammable pajamas versus the chemicals used to create these safer alternatives. For detailed information, be sure to read the summary of the Consumer Product Safety Commission's sleepwear regulations.

The gist of the summary states, however, that sleepwear should self-extinguish for children who are aged nine months and older. For babies under nine months, pajamas do not have to be made of inflammable material but should be tight fitting to reduce the chance of loose material coming in contact with an ignition source and to limit the amount of air that could feed flames.

Finally, be sure the toddler pajamas you purchase do not contain any choking hazards, such as strings, loose buttons, snaps, and hooks, or torn sections. While of course you want your little one to be warm and cozy, you also want him or her to remain safe at all times.
