Are you ready to upgrade your daughter's winter coat?

Barack Obama's Stylish Daughters

When Barack Obama took the oath of office on January 20, 2009, tens of millions of people around the world tuned into watch the historic event. However, not everyone was focused solely on the nation's first African-American president. Rather, many mini-fashionistas had their sights set on what Obama’s daughters, 10-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha, would be wearing as their father made history.

However, even before Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States in Washington D.C., his young daughters captured the attention of the world's leading fashion editors. Many noted that thanks to the girls' stylish mother, Michelle, Malia and Sasha were morphing into clothing icons for the younger set. By the time the Inauguration rolled around both Obama daughters were considered "fashion-forward models," who dressed in trendy, age-appropriate attire. Given their reputation for being among the best-dressed girls in the world, it came as no surprise that their Inauguration Day outerwear would make national headlines.

About JCrew Obama Jackets

The fashionable First Daughters didn't disappoint on Inauguration Day. Both girls wore wool coats from JCrew’s Crewcuts kids’ line that were designed specifically for the First Family. Malia’s double-breasted coat featured a regal deep periwinkle blue, while her younger sister stood out from the crowd in a camera-friendly single-breasted guava pink coat, which she wore over a coral dress and paired with a contrasting orange sherbet colored scarf and gloves. Both of the girls' coats also featured matching velvet ribbon belts secured at the waist, which echoed the tie on their mother’s ultra-luxe Isabel Toledo dress and matching coat.

Jacket Availability

There's good news and bad news for trendy tweens looking to get their hands on JCrew Obama Jackets. The good news is that JCrew plans to feature “modified versions” of the coats worn by Malia and Sasha on Inauguration Day in its fall 2009 Crewcuts collection. The bad news is that you will not be able to find the exact looks the First Daughters modeled during their father’s swearing-in ceremony. JCrew executives say they don’t want to mass market the exact same designs because they don’t want to come across as exploiting the Obama’s young daughters. Still, that hasn’t stopped the company from featuring modified versions of the First Daughters' coats on its website along with a toll free number (1-800-591-3745) you can call to pre-order the stylish outerwear.

JCrew and the First Family

JCrew is a well-respected preppy, upscale American retailer, which was founded in 1983. The brand is known for its conservative collections of men's and women's clothing, accessories, and shoes. In recent years the company expanded to include a children's line called Crewcuts.

Michelle Obama and JCrew

The popular clothing company was a resource for Michelle Obama throughout the campaign, most notably during her October 2008 appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On that occasion Obama bragged that she purchased her reasonably priced yellow sweater, skirt and blouse ensemble from JCrew's website. Michelle Obama turned to JCrew again for the Kids' Inaugural concert. That night the political fashionista donned an olive JCrew cardigan over a blue JCrew skirt and top. The First Lady also opted to integrate JCrew accessories on Inauguration Day. Michelle was applauded for pairing the company's sensibly priced green leather gloves with her high-end designer coat.

Malia and Sasha's JCrew Coat Collection

In addition to outfitting the First Daughters on Inauguration Day, JCrew also designed coats for Malia and Sasha to wear to the star-studded "We Are One" Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. On that occasion both girls wore wool pique Herbie coats from JCrew’s fall 2009 collection. Sasha's off-white coat featured brass buttons, while Malia's dove gray coat was accessorized with horn buttons. Both coats featured sweet details inside, such as grosgrain piping and charmeuse lining.

Look for versions of the Obama girls' JCrew Herbie coats online beginning August 2009. The company reiterates that coats' designs have been modified, so that Malia and Sasha will not have to attend school with other girls wearing their exact coats.
