These dresses can continue to be worn into the summer months for birthday parties and weddings, so parents get their money’s worth with every outfit purchased. If you are looking for that perfect spring dress for your little girl, or just want to learn more about what was popular in previous years and what trends are expected in the future, then read on for details.
The Tradition of Girls Spring Dresses
Wearing their “Sunday best” has been a ritual for little girls in the spring time for generations. Formerly, a deep red was a traditional color for Easter and surrounding dates as it represented the blood of Christ, however as the Sunday best look has become more mainstream, many of today’s girls spring dresses are sold in white and pastels. Even churches that are very casual during the rest of the year will host a legion of little girls all dolled up during the Easter season. Girls spring dresses are also popular outside of religious circles, being purchased for spring picnics, Easter egg hunts, weddings, outdoor parties and other special occasions that call for a dress that is ideal for warming weather.
What’s Popular
Back around 50 years ago, springtime apparel was much more formal. While girls still dress up today, they are nothing compared to the fanfare found in the wardrobe of little girls growing up in the 1950s and 60s. A dress with puffed sleeves, a petticoat, and finished off with ruffled socks, a hat and patented leather shoes were very common for every Sunday, and even more formal around the Easter season.
Much of the ruffles and fluff have faded away over the years, however little girls still look beautiful in their springtime duds. Today’s spring dresses are usually made out of polyester and come with thick-strapped tank tops or cap sleeves. The dresses are usually between knee and thigh length, and can come in a solid color or floral print. Sometimes paisley or gingham are also available, however the majority of dresses are solid or printed with a garden-inspired design.
Springtime bonnets are also a thing of the past, and today most little girls opt for a headband or hair bow that coordinates with their dress. Frilled socks and patented leather shoes are still worn, but tights are sometimes preferred. In white, pale pink or blue, tights are often light in color, but can also come in darker shades. The sock or tight preference also depends upon the weather in that particular youngster’s hometown. There are no hard or fast rules for spring dresses, as weather and regional trends must be taken into consideration.
Where to Buy
The best time to purchase a springtime dress is the week or so before Easter. You will find great sales at stores during this time of the season. There are many places to find springtime dresses, but a few retail favorites include Gymboree, Gap Kids and Pumpkin Patch. You can also check out Target, Sears and Wal-Mart for some great deals.
Online, enjoy the adorable dress selections on websites such as Trendy Togs. From flowers to polka dots and everything in between, you will find the perfect little ensemble for your princess.
Baby Eggi provides a more casual and comfy option if you are looking to doll up your little girl but she isn’t so excited about the dress up process.
How to Buy
Whenever you go shopping for a dress, try to bring the wearer with you. It may be a struggle to convince a child to go dress shopping (though some kids adore it!) but it will be worth the time you save not having to drive back and forth to stores making returns for something that is too big, too small, too scratchy, or just plain too much.
