Girls Low Rise Jeans
From LoveToKnow Childrens Clothing
Some gals call them trendy and consider them must have wardrobe pieces, but for moms with young daughters, girls low rise jeans are a fashion don’t.
About Girls Low Rise Jeans
Low rise jeans made their debut in the 1960s, but they’ve become much more popular since their resurgence in the 2000s. In the 60's they were called hip-huggers, hipsters or lowriders because of their cut. Designers trimmed the pants, so they sit about three inches below a person’s navel, which is significantly lower than traditional jeans.
As for the "rise" of the jeans that’s measured by the distance between the pant's crotch and waist. On a "regular" pair of jeans the rise is about 12 inches. However, with low rise jeans the average "rise" is slashed to just eight inches.
Super Low Rise Jeans
In the early 2000s several denim companies introduced super low rise jeans, which begged the question: "How low can you go?" Super low rise jeans rest at about six inches below the waist and are particularly popular with teens and tweens. In addition, super low rise jeans for girls also feature a barely there zipper. In most cases, the pant’s zipper is a single inch. That’s far shorter than zippers found on traditional jeans, which measure about three inches long. Generally, the zippers found on super low rise jeans are not functional and merely act as decoration.
The Popularity of Low Rise Jeans
In the late 1960s psychedelic music and hip huggers were all the rage. Helping popularize the trend of low cut jeans was the fact that celebrities, such as Janis Joplin and Twiggy lived in their hip huggers. Back then low rise jeans would often be paired with long paisley-printed tops. However, when the jeans made a comeback in the early 2000s, the focus was more on showing off as much skin as possible. Pop singer Britney Spears is credited for bringing low rise jeans back into fashion in 2000. The teen idol made a habit of pairing her low rise jeans with cropped shirts to expose her torso and back. Spears' young fans quickly followed suit, much to the chagrin of their parents.
What Parents Dislike About Girls Low Rise Jeans
While low rise jeans are considered ultra hip and trendy, many parents do not allow their young daughters to wear the revealing denim. Girls low-rise jeans are typically worn with short tops and give more than just a glimpse of skin in the midriff area. Many parents do not embrace this overexposure. Most moms and dads will readily admit that they don’t think it is appropriate for a 10-year-old girl to be showing off so much skin.
In addition to exposing stomach skin, low rise jeans also have a tendency to reveal underwear, and in some cases, bare buttocks, when the wearer bends over or sits down. Most parents consider this to be the worst feature of low rise jeans for girls. This is especially true if young girls also insist that their parents purchase them special low rise thongs to wear under their low cut jeans. Since traditional panties cannot be worn with low rise jeans, most girls opt to wear thongs, which for most parents is disconcerting to say the least.
Low Rise Jean Accessories
If you are parent, you may also consider low rise jean accessories to be disturbing as well. The most popular low cut jean accessories are tattoos and belly rings. Since the navel and back are highly visible while wearing low rise jeans, many girls request having a tattoo placed below their navel or on their lower back. Meanwhile, others opt to get their navel pierced in order to display a bellybutton ring while wearing their low cut jeans.
