Custom Girls Dresses
From LoveToKnow Childrens Clothing
Custom girls' dresses used to be the norm – all children's clothes were made by hand by either parents or servants for centuries. If a family was very wealthy, a tailor or seamstress would be called in to design a special outfit, but the idea of buying something ready-made is very recent. For a variety of reasons, more parents are now turning back the clock and looking for a designer or sewing professional to make a special occasion dress for their daughters.
Why Order Custom Girls' Dresses?
On the face of it, custom clothing makes more sense for grown women, rather than young girls. A grown woman may have body issues that would render a custom dress necessary so that she be most flattered. Girls, on the other hand, are much more likely to have uniform bodies that will be flattered by standard sizes. Even a plus-size girl can easily find a dress to fit and flatter her.
Obviously, a wedding or other special occasion often demands a custom dress. For an elaborate wedding, a flower girl's outfit will need to match the bride's or bridesmaids' dresses and it can be easier to have it made. Likewise, a dress for Easter, communion, or even a bat mitzvah (for older girls), adds to the occasion and makes it more memorable. And since custom dresses will look better and are often no more expensive than a ready-made girls party dress, there are few reasons not to consider it.
Current fashion trends for girls can also dictate a parent's choice to order custom girls' dresses. For tweens and young teens, dresses in stores can have a much older look than either parents or girls might find comfortable. Or it may just be impossible to find something in a fabric and color that really suits the girl in question. Finally, a girl with a strong sense of her individuality and style may want to express that through clothing – and it's hard to feel like an individual when there are twenty other versions of the same dress on a rack.
Who Does the Sewing?
Nearly all women used to know how to sew, although of course some were much more skilled than others. Most women were expected to make their children's clothes, or at least band together with helpful relatives. These days, far fewer women can sew and far fewer still have the time to make a wardrobe. It's also harder to find a good local custom dressmaker. This all makes organizing custom girls' dresses a bit tricky.
However, there are several options. Many people these days turn to the Internet, where it's easier for shops or individuals who do custom work to advertise. These businesses make a point of making it easy for customers to design the dress and arrange the sewing. While of course it's preferable to have a girl measured and fitted in person, that just isn't always feasible.
If you have a very specific, complicated design in mind, you might look for a local costumer. This is especially helpful if you're hoping to create a period dress, or copy a vintage dress.
Online Options
Because good local designers can be so hard to find, it's useful to look online and see samples of various work and shop around. There are several places that offer quality custom girls' dresses and other outfits, guaranteeing you a wonderful one-of-a-kind piece. Some options include:
- Bayou Vintage, which makes a huge range of custom girls' clothing using both reproduction fabrics and vintage pieces. There are matching accessories available and you can get as involved in the design as you like.
- Style for Grace also allows you to design a dress yourself from the ground up. All their fabrics are 100 percent cotton.
- Etsy is where people can offer services as individuals, so you are supporting a very small business. Many people design custom children's clothes.
Of course, a custom dress will require more care than one bought off the rack, but it will also last longer and be more valued through the years.
